Commissioners and EMA Issue Burn Ban For Floyd County

Floyd County Board of Commissioners issue a BURN BAN for Floyd County Indiana until further notice.

Effective immediately, the following activities are prohibited in Floyd County:

  1. Campfires and other recreational fires;
  2. Open burning of any kind, using wood or other combustible materials, with the exception of cooking grills fueled by charcoal briquettes or gas grills;
  3. The burning of timber, vegetation or construction materials;
  4. The use of burn barrels
  5. The use of ALL fireworks.

This will automatically renew each seven-day period until rescinded by either the commissioners or the Floyd County EMA Office.

All residents are called upon to directly comply with this Burn Ban. Drought conditions have increased the risk of wide spread fire hazards.

Any fires should be reported to 911 immediately. Fires have the potential to grow quickly out of control and threaten extensive damage to property, injuries or death.

Lafayette Twp Responds To Vehicle Crash On Scottsville Rd Saturday Afternoon.

On Saturday October 15th just before 4:30 PM Lafayette Township Fire Protection District was dispatched to a single vehicle crash in the 6500 block of Scottsville Rd in Floyds Knobs Indiana. Lafayette Twp Rescue 1 arrived on scene to find a vehicle on its top in a creek. Initial dispatch reports that a victim was trapped under the vehicle. Rescue 1 arrived on scene to find all victims out of the vehicle. Three victims were involved in the crash and transported to various hospitals. Two children were transported to Norton’s Children Hospital in Louisville and the other transported to Baptist Health Floyd. The victim that was transported to Baptist Health Floyd was pronounced dead there by doctors. The condition of the other two victims are unknown.

The crash is under investigation by Floyd County Sheriff Office.

Updated 10-16-2016. Original story stated victim was transported to University of Louisville. While in route, the transporting ambulance contacted University of Louisville doctors who then advised that ambulance to divert to the closest hospital Baptist Health Floyd.

Road Paving Changes On I 64 West Will Close Off Ramps Overnight

INDOT FLOYD COUNTY, IN-Paving will continue along westbound Interstate 64’s center lane this week through Wednesday night (SEPTEMBER 21) between the hours of 7 p.m. and 8 a.m. Milling and resurfacing operations in the center lane also require overnight closures of the westbound right lane.

The westbound right lane and I-64 ramps remain to be milled and paved.  That work will begin—weather permitting—at the end of the week.  INDOT’s contract completion date is October 31.

Paving operations require westbound I-64 ramp closures beginning at 9 P.M. at these locations:
TUESDAY—Westbound Exit 119, to U.S. Highway 150
WEDNESDAY—Westbound Exit 118, S.R. 62/SR 64

Again, Westbound off ramps as scheduled to reopen by 8 A.M. You can see the locations here:

Bicentennial Torch Relay Arrives In Floyd County Thursday

The Bicentennial Torch will be in Floyd county on Thursday. Starting at 3 P.M. the torch will make it’s way from US 150 at the Harrison County Line all the way down Paoli Pike And through New Albany. Come join us at the corner of Paoli Pike and Scottsville Rd around 3:30-4:00 as we line the intersection in celebration of Indiana 200th anniversary.

Lane And Road Closures Expected Sunday Sept. 18th

FROM INDOT (Indiana Department of Transportation)-

Indiana Department of Transportation maintenance crews are being scheduled to make pavement repairs this Sunday (SEPTEMBER 18) at two interstate highway locations in Floyd County.

  • Interstate 265 over Mt. Taber Road will be patched and repaired—weather permitting—Sunday morning between 5 and 11 a.m.  Work will require closing the eastbound left lane between mile markers 2.0 and 3.0.  The right lane and shoulder will remain open to traffic.
  • The eastbound I-64 on-ramp from eastbound U.S. Highway 150 will be completely closed to traffic this Sunday between 11 a.m. and 8 p.m.—weather permitting—for pavement repairs.  All I-64 lanes at mile marker 119.0 will remain open

Lafayette Township Welcomes New Deputy Chief

tmp_18767-20160810_134544-1703152263The Lafayette Township Fire Protection District and the Board of Fire Trustees are pleased to announce Terry Herthel as the new Deputy Fire Chief for the Fire Department. Terry recently served as the Floyd County Emergency Management Agency Director. Terry’s experience in Emergency Services over the last 37 years will be a great asset to the Fire Department and the community. The position came open about 2 months ago when Don Allen retired after serving the community for over 45 years. Don continues to assist the Fire Department with Fire Prevention and Crusade for Children. Congratulations to both of these men!

Vehicle Fires Make Up The Day on Monday 8-8-2016

8-8-16_I64WESTVehicleCrashFireTwo vehicles caught fire in separate inecidents On Monday August 8th.  The first incident happened around 10:20 A.M. on I 64 West near the one hundred and nineteen mile marker. A vehicle crashed into the back of another vehicle and then caught fire. A secondary accident occurred behind the first accident as well. Both crashes caused minor injures and two people were taken to the hospital to be checked for further evaluation.

The second incident, Lafayette Twp was called for mutual aid to Ashberry Ln in New Chapel Fire Company’s District. A SUV was being used to cultivate a hay field. The vehicle caught fire, possibly from overheating engine parts, catching the field on fire as well. Lafayette responded Brush 15 to the scene and assisted in extinguishing the field and the vehicle. No one was injured in the fire.

RV Fire on I-64 Westbound Thursday

Lafayette Township Fire Protection District and New Chapel Fire Company were dispatched to I-64 Westbound, around the 122 mile marker, on a RV fire. First units on scene arrived seven minutes later to a bus type RV heavily involved with fire. Firefighters were able to gain control of the fire at 9:30 A.M. The RV, hauling a large trailer behind it, was a total loss due to the fire. The trailer only suffered minor damage and none of its contents were damaged. The fire started in the engine compartment located in the back of the RV. The cause is unknown. No one was injured in the fire.

Floyd County To Launch Mass Notification For Residents In July

Floyd County government officials announce the launch of the Alert Floyd County Mass Notification System. A emergency alert system that can send text, email or voice call alerts. When residents sign up for the free service they can get immediate weather alerts, unexpected road closures, missing persons alerts and life safety alerts. You can add several locations and a few different ways to contact you with an alert. You can also customize what alerts you wish to receive. Floyd County Residents will be able to sign up by following this link Floyd County Mass Notification System . The link will also be on the following websites: www.floydcounty.in.gov and www.floydcountyema.org.

Residents that signed up for the NIXLE notification system will have to sign up for the new notification system. NIXLE will no longer be in use after July 8th when Alert Floyd County Mass Notification System come online.
