Monday afternoon May 21, 2018 Lafayette Township, Floyds Knobs, IN, a chemical was released into the Yellow Fork Creek, along Buck Creek Road in the 5600 block. Information issued by Floyd County Emergency Management stated the chemical released was used normally to deodorize portable toilet and holding tanks. The chemical was discharged into a storm drain that emptied into the Yellow Fork Creek causing a fish kill. The chemical was reportedly contained and no immediate threat to human life. People and pets should stay out of the creek in this area until remediation is complete. The chemical can cause irritation to the skin, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea if ingested. Please continue to use caution when traveling through the area as there may be partial lane closures while clean-up is in the process.
Agencies involved with the incident and clean up: Lafayette Township Fire Protection District, Floyd County Emergency Management, Floyd County Health Department, Indiana Department of Environmental Management, and three private environmental contractors.
